What are the functions performed by bacteria?
Bacteria break down chemical waste that is produced in the tank. Fish produce waste products containing ammonia. Ammonia is toxic to the fish. Different types of bacteria working in sequence to convert ammonia into less harmful compounds. Plants use the resulting compounds to grow. The process of converting ammonia into less toxic substance is called nitrogen cycle.
